What is Rapid Prototyping?
Rapid Manufacturing
Refers to using rapid prototyping technologies to manufacture
products directly for end-use. Commonly used in:
Rapid Prototyping Machine
A synonym is direct manufacturing. rapid prototyping Computer-controlled
additive fabrication. Commonly used synonyms for RP are:
- 3-Dimensional printing
- Additive fabrication
- Freeform fabrication
- Solid freeform fabrication
- Stereolithography
Rapid Prototyping Methods
- SLA
- SLS
- CNC machining
- FDM
- Cast Urethane
Rapid Surfacing
A technique for creating a surface model of an object that
involves wrapping surfaces over a polygonal model.
Rapid Tooling
Most often refers to the process of fabricating molds from
a rapid prototyping (addative) process. Rapid tooling may
utilize direct or indirect methods: In direct methods, the
part fabricated by the RP machine itself is used as the tool.
In indirect methods, the part fabricated by the RP machine
is used as a pattern in a secondary process. The resulting
part from the secondary process is then used as the tool.
In recent years, the term rapid tooling has been borrowed
by practitioners of industry-standard methods such as subtractive
CNC to refer to the ability to streamline these processes
to compete with additive technologies.[Also referred to as
"rapid tooling prototyping" "rapid prototyping
tooling"]
Random copolymer
Copolymer in which the molecules of each monomer are randomly
arranged in the polymer backbone.
Raw material
Naturally occurring starting material used to manufacture
a product, such as petroleum, coal, ores, wood, hides, and
cotton, as well as water and air; the intermediate product
(semi-finished product) is formed from the raw material during
the production process, and the finished (manufactured) products
are produced from the intermediate product.
Rayon
The generic term for fibers, staple, and continuous filament
yarns composed of regenerated cellulose. Rayon fibers are
similar in chemical structure to natural cellulose fibers
such as cotton except that the synthetic fiber contains shorter
polymer units. Most rayon is made by the viscose process.
R2
The ProMetal R2 machine enables digital manufacutring of metal
prts and tooling. For more information, download brochure.
RCT
The ProMetal RCT is a factory floor machine that produces
casting molds and cores directly from CAD files. For more
information, download brochure.
Reaching Critical Mass
Having enough customers or market share to become profitable.
Recycling
Reutilization of raw or used materials; for example, plastic
sprues from injection-molded parts are recycled by processing
them to form a granulate, which is then returned to the injection
molding process.
Refining
Purification and improvement of natural materials and technical
products (sugar, petroleum, etc.), performed in a refinery.
Regenerated cellulose (cellophane)
A transparent cellulose plastics material made by mixing cellulose
xanthate with a dilute sodium hydroxide solution to form a
viscose.Regeneration is carried out by extruding the viscose,
in sheet form, into an acid bath to create regenerated cellulose.
The material is very widely used as a packaging and over-wrapped
material of exceptional clarity. The film also has good electrical
properties and is resistant to oils and greases. Included
among recent applications is the use of the material as a
release agent in reinforced plastics molding.
RenShape SL 5510
A stereolithography material known as RenShapeŽ SL 5510 designed
specifically for the SLAŽ 350/3500/5000 systems. For more

Replication Services
Any service performed by Direct Dimensions which require
the creation of physical models from digital data (foam milling,
rapid prototyping, machining, etc).
Resin
Amorphous material with a consistency that can vary from soft
to rigid; thermosetting resins form the basis for thermoset
plastics.
Resin Injection Process
A closed mold is used to manufacture molded parts from resin,
and reinforcing materials are inserted into the molded parts.
Resistivity
The ability of a material to resist passage of electrical
current either through its bulk or on a surface. The unit
of volume resistivity is the ohm-cm, or surface resistivity,
the ohm.
Resolution
Refers to the minimum increment in dimensions that a system
achieve. It's one of the main determining factors for finish,
appearance and accuracy, but certainly not the only one. reverse
engineering The process of measuring an existing part to create
a geometric CAD data definition of the part. In common non-technical
usage, reverse engineering may also refer to measuring or
analyzing a part or a product for the purpose of copying it.
Reverbiagize
To reword a proposal with the hope of getting it accepted
by people who didn't like it the first time around. As in:
"It's the same concept, we've just reverbiagized it."
Reverse Engineering
The process of measuring and then creating a CAD model of
an object that reflects how the object would be designed originally
(design intent).
RIM
Standard Acronym for Reaction Injection Molding. An industry
standard process that involves the injection of a reactive
liquid mixture-in most cases polyurethane or polyisocayanurate-into
a closed mold where chemical curing, through an exothermic
reaction, takes place. The first RIM applications did not
occur until 1966 with the introduction of the Bayer AG all
plastic car at the K-67 Plastics Fair in Germany. Some rapid
prototyping firms are misusing the acronym by applying it
to Rapid Injection Molding which is simply the rapid production
of traditional injection mold tooling and parts.
Rheology
The study of flow of polymeric materials on a macroscopic
and microscopic level. Rigid Stiff, not flexible.
Rigid PVC
Polyvinyl chloride or a polyvinyl chloride acetate copolymer
characterized by a relatively high degree of hardness; it
may be formulated with or without a small percentage of plasticizer.
RIM Reaction injection molding, which refers to an integrated
mixing and injection process for plastics from two or more
highly reactive components.
Rockwell hardness
A common method of testing a plastics material for resistance
to indentation in which a diamond or steel ball, under pressure,
is used to pierce the test specimen. The load used is expressed
in kilograms and a 10-kilogram weight is first applied and
the degree of penetration noted. The so-called major load
(60-150 kilograms) is next applied and a second reading obtained.
The hardness is then calculated as the difference between
the two loads and expressed with nine different prefix letters
to denote the type of penetrator used and the weight applied
as the major load.
Roving
Refers to a certain number of approximately parallel glass
strands combined to form a larger strand (or glass roving);
an individual glass strand consists of a certain number of
individual glass filaments that have been combined without
twisting to form a thread of uniform size, and these filaments
are arranged in a mostly parallel relationship.
