Hardener
Second chemical component required for activating the cross-linking reaction of prepolymers, in order to manufacture thermosets or elastomers. A substance or mixture of substances added to a monomeric or polymeric composition, or an adhesive to promote or control the curing reaction. It also designates a substance added to control the degree of hardness of a cured system. See also catalyst.

Hardness
The resistance of a plastics material to compression and indentation. Among the most important methods of testing this property are Brinell hardness, Rockwell hardness, and Shore hardness.

Heat-distortion point
The temperature at which a standard test bar deflects 0.010 in. under a stated load of either 66 or 264 psi.

High Polymer
A large molecule which is usually but not always comprised of repeat units of the low molecular weight species. Arbitrarily designated as having a molecular weight greater than 10,000.

Highly Engineered Modeling
The process of reverse engineering an actual part into its CAD model with Design Intent using standard geometric features and form constraints.

Holding Pressure
Conveys additional melt into the molded part as it solidifies in the injection molding process, thus minimizing shrinkage (loss of volume) that would otherwise occur as the injection-molded part cools; it also compresses the internal structure of the part. hydraulic Operated by the pressure of a liquid.

Hybrid Model
A polygonal model that uses rapid surfacing and traditional solid modeling techniques. Used when basic geometric features merge with complex contours.

Hydrogenation
Chemical process where hydrogen is introduced into a compound. hydrolysis Chemical reaction of a substance with water. hygroscopic Tends to absorb moisture.
